Book Club: "The Nickel Boys" by Colson Whitehead

Do you love to talk about what you’re reading? Join a book club to share your thoughts and hear what others have to say about books that spark discussion, curiosity, and debate!

Join the discussion as we go over Colson Whitehead’s The Nickel Boys.

Winner of the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for fiction, this novel is set about 100 years after Colson Whitehead’s award-winning book The Underground Railroad. In this novel in the Jim Crow South, teenaged Elroy is sent to a brutal reform school called the Nickel Academy for a crime he did not commit. There, he struggles to hold onto Dr. Martin Luther’s King’s ringing assertion, “Throw us in jail and we will still love you.” The trials that Elroy and the other boys go through at the school are reprehensible, but Whitehead leads you through the story with aplomb.
