Honouring Orange Shirt Day & the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day dedicated to honouring the lost children and survivors of the residential “school” system, as well as recognizing the ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous communities.

Parkgate, Lynn Valley, and Capilano Libraries are open for learning and reflection from 10:00am-5:00pm on September 30. We encourage patrons to take time on this day to reflect on the history and experiences of Indigenous peoples in Canada, and learn more about how to support the 94 calls to action

See below for recommended resources.

Learning Kits & Games:

Borrow a Caring Community Kit centred on Indigenous voices and experiences. Each kit includes books and educational activities designed to enhance understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and creators.

NVDPL also offers Puppet Kits featuring Indigenous titles for children, including “Otter Doesn’t Know” by Andrea Fritz, “Gifts from Raven” by Kung Jaadee, “Amik” by Sharon King, and more.

At any NVDPL branch, patrons can explore puzzles featuring Indigenous artwork or borrow a copy of the Walking in Good Relations board game. And coming soon: Coast Salish Storytime Kits!

Our libraries are located on the traditional territories of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh), and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) First Nations. Their ancestors have lived here for countless generations. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect community, share knowledge and inspire stories on unceded Coast Salish Territory.
