Frequently Asked Questions Library Takeout

Is it safe to borrow library materials during the COVID-19 outbreak?

North Vancouver District Public Library has developed a Safety Plan for our operations during this time, based on the recommendations from local health authorities and WorkSafeBC.

We’re taking steps to help our community stay safe and ask that you respect posted guidelines on your visits to pick up materials at the library. If you or someone you have come in contact with is experiencing any symptoms of illness, we ask that you refrain from borrowing library materials or visiting the library.

How do I place an order?

  1. Order Personal Picks or Kid's Picks! Library staff are experts at matching patrons of all ages with just-right titles. Fill out the “Personal Picks” form and our staff will contact you with next steps. We will do our best to respond to order requests within 72 hours.
  2. Request items over the phone if you know what you’d like but need assistance. We’ll ensure we understand your needs and can locate items for you.

What should I expect when I come to the library to pick up my Library Takeout order?

Once we notify you that your order is ready, we will check it out to your account, put it in a paper bag, and put in on our Holds shelves in alphabetical order by the last name of the person who has placed the order. If it is in a paper bag, it is already checked out and ready to go, so you will not need to use the Self-Check machine or wait in line for staff assistance at the Circulation counter.

Please note: If you are also picking up regular Holds during your visit, these items are NOT on your account yet and you will need to make sure you check them out before you leave.

Please keep a safe distance from other patrons and staff during your visit, and follow all posted guidelines.

What are your hours for the Library Takeout Service?

How long can I borrow items?

We have extended some loan periods to give you more time to enjoy your materials and reduce the number of trips you need to make to the library to return materials.

Please check your due date slip for specific due dates.

Can I request available items at all NVDPL locations, and other libraries in BC?

Lending between library systems in BC is currently suspended, so you can only borrow items available at NVDPL’s libraries.

If you see an item available at any NVDPL location, we can transfer items between for you to pick up at your home library.

Can I place a Library Takeout order if I have overdue fines?

Yes!  Although library accounts are usually blocked once more than $5 is owing in fines, our patrons don’t have the ability to settle their accounts at present, so we will only reserve the right to limit access to cardholders with significant outstanding bills on their accounts.

Can I send a friend, neighbour or family member to pick up my order for me?

Yes! Please ensure the person coming to pick up your order knows to look for it under your last name. Remember that the library cardholder to whom the items are checked out is responsible for the materials and will be charged for any loss or damage.

What if I don’t know what I want to borrow?

No problem! Our library staff are experts at selecting materials based on your preferences. Whether you are looking for some picture books for the kids or some engaging mysteries for yourself, we can help you find great content. You can request Personal Picks, or, if you call the library, choose the option to speak to a librarian for assistance.

Can I return items to the library?

Yes! Our book drops are open.

For materials that are returned, we are taking precautions to ensure that our collections are safe to be handled by members of the public and our staff.  If you prefer to return them to the library and you are able to venture out safely, you can put them in a book drop at the library, which are open 24/7. Please return NVDPL materials only to an NVDPL library at this time.

Note: As a result of our current procedure of placing returned items under 72-hour quarantine, it will take a few days for items to come off your library account. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

I heard about your service, but don’t have a library card. Can I get signed up?

Absolutely!  Please see our library web site for more information on Getting a Library Card during our closure to the public.

Is there an option for home delivery?

No, but you are welcome to send a delegate in the form of a friend, neighbour or family member to pick up your order on your behalf!  Just make sure you tell your pickup person to look for your order under your last name. The library has some additional service options available for individuals who have difficulty reading print materials and those with physical disabilities.
