Frequently Asked Questions Library Takeout

How many items can I, or my family, request?

You can request up to 40 items on your holds list.

Using the online form or by calling the library, you can request up to 10 items that are currently available per library card.

You can place multiple orders for up to 10 items for people in your household, though due to social distancing, we recommend that only one person picks up the order(s), so please ensure you can carry all of your bags.

If you call with your order, we may need to speak with you for a while. In order to help as many people as quickly as possible, we ask that you have your items organized as best as possible prior to calling. If you don’t know what materials you’d like, a librarian is happy to help.

Is it safe to borrow library materials during the COVID-19 outbreak?

Working with approval from local health authorities and District of North Vancouver District Fire services, we are taking all precautions to ensure that materials on our shelves and those that are returned to us are safe to be handled by members of the public. Any returned items are not being handled for the recommended period of 72 hours.

Pick-ups must be scheduled in advance and we have limited the appointments available in order to promote physical distancing.

If you are feeling unwell or if any member of your household is sick or in isolation, we ask that you refrain from borrowing library materials. This will help us all feel more comfortable and confident with the safety of our collections. We look forward to serving you again when everyone in your household is healthy.

How do I place an order?

You have three options for requesting material using Library Takeout.

  1. Place a hold through the online catalogue and we will contact you when it is time to schedule a pick-up.
  2. Order Personal Picks! Library staff are experts at matching patrons of all ages with just-right titles. Fill out the “Personal Picks” form and our staff will contact you with next steps.  We will do our best to respond to order requests within 72 hours.
  3. Request items over the phone if you know what you’d like but need assistanceWe’ll ensure we understand your needs and can locate items for you.

What should I expect when I come to the library to pick up my Library Takeout order?

We have set-up designated pick-up areas outside library entrances. To promote physical distancing, we are limiting the number of appointments per half-hour pickup windows. Show something with your name on it to staff through the window and staff will retrieve your order. Please stand back while we place your order outside the doors.

Only one person is permitted in the pick-up area at a time. If others are present, wait on a floor marker until it is safe to proceed towards the door.

If you are picking up multiple orders, we ask that you only send one person.

What are your hours for the Library Takeout Service?

Pick-up appointments are available:

  • Monday- Wednesday: 9am-1pm
  • Thursday: 3pm-7pm
  • Friday: 9am-1pm
  • Saturday: 10am-2pm

If these times do not work for you, please let us know and we will do our best to accommodate. If you need help with selecting materials, placing orders, or your library account, please contact us during our library service hours.

How long can I borrow items?

We have extended some loan periods to give you more time to enjoy your materials and reduce the number of trips you need to make to the library to return materials.

Please check your due date slip for specific due dates.

Can I request available items at all NVDPL locations, and other libraries in BC?

Lending between library systems in BC is currently suspended, so you can only borrow items available at NVDPL’s libraries.

If you see an item available at any NVDPL location, we can transfer items between for you to pick up at your home library.

Can I place a Library Takeout order if I have overdue fines?

Yes!  Although library accounts are usually blocked once more than $5 is owing in fines, our patrons don’t have the ability to settle their accounts at present, so we will only reserve the right to limit access to cardholders with significant outstanding bills on their accounts.

Can I send a friend, neighbour or family member to pick up my order for me?

Yes! Please identify the person who will be picking up your order to staff when you discuss the appointment time for pickup.  Remember that the library cardholder to whom the items are checked out is responsible for the materials and will be charged for any loss or damage.

What if I don’t know what I want to borrow?

No problem! Our library staff are experts at selecting materials based on your preferences. Whether you are looking for some picture books for the kids or some engaging mysteries for yourself, we can help you find great content. You can request Personal Picks, or, if you call the library, choose the option to speak to a librarian for assistance.

Can I return items to the library?

Yes! Our book drops are open.

For materials that are returned, we are taking precautions to ensure that our collections are safe to be handled by members of the public and our staff.  If you prefer to return them to the library and you are able to venture out safely, you can put them in a book drop at the library, which are open 24/7. Please return NVDPL materials only to an NVDPL library at this time.

Note: As a result of our current procedure of placing returned items under 72-hour quarantine, it will take a few days for items to come off your library account. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

I heard about your service, but don’t have a library card. Can I get signed up?

Absolutely!  Please see our library web site for more information on Getting a Library Card during our closure to the public.

Is there an option for home delivery?

No, but you are welcome to send a delegate in the form of a friend, neighbour or family member to pick up your order on your behalf!  Just make sure you tell staff who will be picking up your order when they schedule your appointment.  The Pickup Person will need to show something with their name on it when they arrive at the library. The library has some additional service options available for individuals who have difficulty reading print materials and those with physical disabilities.

Do you know when the library is going to open again?

BC’s Restart Plan indicates that libraries in BC could prepare to reopen for some in-person services. NVDPL's plans for gradual reintroduction of services are in development. Please check our homepage for updates.
