Getting Started: Truth & Reconciliation

Join us on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to learn more about what you can do to advance reconciliation and recommit to understanding, accepting, and learning from the truth of our shared history. Every child, and every one, matters.

At six years old, residential school survivor Phyllis Webstad was stripped of her shiny new orange shirt on her first day attending the St. Joseph Mission Residential School. Since 2013, September 30 has been known as Orange Shirt Day, a day to recognize the harm and pain caused by the residential school system. And now, for the first time ever, Canada will observe a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30.

Attend this virtual session for recommendations of books and other resources that illuminate the atrocities and realities of the residential school system and their enduring legacy, and start your own self-directed learning plan.

Please note that this session will take place over Zoom. You will need a microphone and speakers, or a headset, in order to take part in the session.

Registration required. Register online to receive a Zoom invite prior to the session. Call 604-929-3727, ext. 8166 if you have any questions.

Relations First with Ta7talíya Nahanee

Join Ta7talíya Michelle Nahanee and North Shore Libraries for a virtual introduction to decolonizing your relations to this land, your work and your community, with traditional welcome from Chief Janice George.

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day to recognize the painful history of residential schools, and to honour survivors, their families, and communities. Whether you are new to these conversations and practices, or you’d like to reconnect to, and re-inspire, your unlearning journey, join us for an overview of decolonization and an evening of self-reflection.

While the teachings and critical Indigenous theory shared by Ta7talíya Michelle Nahanee at this talk are grounded in Squamish worldview, they are applicable across Indigenous Territories.

Registration is required! Learn more and register at relationsfirst.eventbrite.ca
