Mere Mortals: Community Deathcare with Ngaio Davis

Mere Mortals is back with more inspiring and engaging speakers. Learn how a heart-centred focus opens our minds to think, talk, and act about the end of life.

It wasn't too long ago that end-of-life and after-death care happened at home, undertaken by the local community. Witnessing death as a natural part of life made death real to all. Nowadays, our dead are often whisked away, never seen and cared for by their families again. In relinquishing our dead's care to professionals, have we hindered our path to healthy grief? Have we forgotten the necessity of rituals and ceremonies in marking life transitions?

Could the pandemic be a reminder for us to engage in conversations about why community deathcare matters? Could it be a wake-up call for us to reimagine what deathcare could be for our loved ones and for ourselves?

Ms. Ngaio Davis is a funeral director, ceremony planner and a staunch advocate of community deathcare. With close to 20 years of experience, Ngaio is a leader, innovator and educator in end-of-life and after-death care.
