An Evening with John MacFarlane

Join us for an evening with award-winning author and maritime historian John MacFarlane!

John presents a talk about his book, Around the World in a Dugout Canoe, a ground-breaking work that reveals the real story of Captain John Voss, the Tilikum, and, setting out from Victoria, B.C., Voss's remarkable attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1901. It is an enduring story of courage, adventure, tragedy and at times, sheer luck.

John MacFarlane is the curator emeritus of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, curator of the Nauticapedia Project and author of a number of books and articles on nautical history. About John
 
John MacFarlane is the curator emeritus of the Maritime Museum of British Columbia, curator of the Nauticapedia Project and author of a number of books and articles on nautical history. He was commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy (Reserve). He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (London), recipient of the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers and the SS Beaver Medal for Maritime Excellence. His book, Around the World in a Dugout Canoe (co-authored with Lynn J. Salmon), won the John Lyman Book Award for best book published in the category of “Canadian Naval and Maritime History.” He lives in Qualicum Beach, BC.
