CANCELLED: Author Talk with Grant Hayter-Menzies

**THIS PROGRAM HAS BEEN CANCELLED***

In the lead up to Remembrance Day, join Grant Hayter-Menzies as he tells the moving tale of Muggins, the fundraising Spitz dog who became a mascot of the Canadian Red Cross during the First World War and raised thousands of dollars for war-related charities.

Born in the home of a millionaire philanthropist, Muggins rose to unlikely fame during the war, when he became Victoria, BC’s most diminutive fundraiser. In the two donation boxes tied to his harness, Muggins ultimately collected the equivalent of $250,000 for the Red Cross, the Blue Cross, food for POWs, aid for orphans and animals wounded in battle.

Based on valuable documents, memorabilia, newspaper and newsreel accounts of Muggins’s brief but brilliant career, Muggins, The Life and Afterlife of a Canadian Canine War Hero tackles the difficult question of human use of animals in war, at home and on the battlefield. It explores how crucial animals, specifically dogs, have been to wounded veterans recovering from physical and emotional damage and the importance of the author's own Spitz, Freddie, who inspired him to write the book.

Copies of the book will be available to purchase at the event from 32 Books.
