Caring for Loved Ones Through Illness and Aging

In this series, we will explore some of the issues concerned with aging and illness. We will also discuss the challenges that caregivers face, as well as the support and resources that are available for them.

Week 1 (Feb.9th)

Robin Rivers – Resources for Caregivers/ Caregiver  Burnout

Looking after an older family member or friend can be rewarding, challenging and exhausting all at the same time. Robin Rivers from Family Services of the North Shore will highlight support and resources available on the North Shore, and how to avoid caregiver burnout.

Robin Rivers is the program manager for seniors and caregivers at Family Services of the North Shore. She coordinates volunteers who provide phone support and walking companionship for seniors and caregivers, leads workshops for caregivers at community partner locations, and welcomes phone calls and emails from caregivers and seniors.

Week 2 (Feb. 16th)

Katie Kearney – Social Prescribing

Social prescribing is when health professionals refer patients to support in the community, in order to improve their health and wellbeing

Katie is the community Connector for Social Prescribing in North Vancouver working out of Parkgate Society. She works one on one with seniors to help them find programs and resources to improve their lives.

Week 3 (Feb.23rd)

Dr. Paul Sugar and Dr. Marylene Kyriazis will speak to us about support for palliative care patients and their families.

Dr Paul Sugar, a palliative care physician on the North Shore, sees patients for pain and symptom management as well as for end of life care at home.
