The Painter and the Thief is a superb Norwegian documentary that uses the unlikely bond between a criminal and his victim as the canvas for a compelling portrait of forgiveness. The tangle of a relationship between Czech painter Barbora Kysilkova and thief Karl-Bertil Nordland is an experiment in compassion, empathy, the negotiation of vulnerability and the conflicting, subconscious motivations to observe and be observed – forms. According to The Guardian, the documentary plays more like a twisting narrative film than real-life portrait. In English and Norwegian with English subtitles.
