Recycling and Society

Many of us on the North Shore are keen to recycle, but are we recycling correctly, and does recycling really make a positive impact on our environment?

What happens if we recycle incorrectly? What prevents people from recycling altogether? What actually happens to recyclable material after it’s collected? How have policy changes in Asia and other regions affected recycling in BC? These are some of the questions that will be answered by our two guests.

Jiaying Zhao, an associate professor of Psychology and Sustainability at UBC, will discuss current research on promoting recycling and composting behaviour, and what sociocultural factors shape the perception of climate change and climate actions. Then, Dave Lefebvre, the Director of Public Affairs for Recycle BC (a not-for-profit organization responsible for residential recycling) will discuss best practices and what actually happens to recycled materials.
