Join us for an important North-Shore wide community conversation as we discuss 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act: Helping Canadians Make Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples a Reality, by Bob Joseph.

Based on a viral article, “21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act” is the essential guide to understanding the legal document and its repercussions on generations of Indigenous Peoples, written by a leading cultural sensitivity trainer.

This discussion will deepen our collective learning following the November 17 event, An Evening with Bob Joseph. NVDPL has 12 copies of the book. Place a hold through the online catalogue or look for a Speed Read copy at your local branch!

How much do you know about the Indian Act? Join your North Shore libraries for an evening with Bob Joseph, Indigenous relations expert and bestselling author of 21 Things You May Not Know About the Indian Act, with moderator Alexander Dirksen.
 
Joseph will explain how Indigenous Peoples can step out from under the Indian Act and return to self-government, self-determination, and self-reliance—and why doing so would result in a better country for every Canadian. He will dissect the complex issues around truth and reconciliation and demonstrate why learning about the Indian Act’s cruel, enduring legacy is essential for the country to move toward true reconciliation.
 
 
Bob Joseph is a member of the Gwawaenuk Nation, is the founder and president of Indigenous Corporate Training Inc., which offers training on Indigenous relations to government and corporate clients. He’s also the bestselling author of  His chief name is K’axwsumala’galis, which, loosely translated, means “whale who emerges itself from the water and presents itself to the world.”
 
Moderator Alexander Dirksen is a proud member of Métis Nation BC. He has diverse experience as a researcher, facilitator, public speaker, and strategist.

Teen Writing Workshop with author Tanya Boteju

Join Tanya Boteju, author of Kings, Queens and In-Betweens for a virtual book presentation and creative writing workshop!

Tanya will share her journey of becoming a published author, lead participants through a series of writing exercises and give you time to share your work.

Tanya Boteju has taught writing in Vancouver for 17 years, where she has continually been inspired by the brilliant young people in her midst. She has English and Education degrees from UBC, a Master of Arts through Columbia University's Teachers College, and a Creative Writing Certificate through SFU’s Writer's Studio.

Teen & Adult Anti-Racist Book Club

Let’s bring our community together to explore the concept of anti-racism and help each other figure out ways to take concrete action towards a more equal society.

We have two titles to explore, and you can chose to read one or both! When we meet over Zoom on October 22nd we will share what we learned from the book(s) and what we’re thinking. We’ll talk about ways to take action and on November 18th we’ll come back together to share what we’ve done and plan for the future!

We will be exploring the titles This Book is Anti-Racist by Tiffany Jewell (teen selection) and How to be Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi (adult selection). 

We will have copies of each book available to participants. Call 604-987-4471, ext. 8175 to ask a librarian how to obtain a copy.
